First week in Pittsburgh

It’s been a week since I’ve arrived in Pittsburgh.

There were quite a lot of items I bought, and issues I experienced with the purchases.

Items I bought–

* Furnitures: Table, Chairs, TV Stand, Bed frame + Mattress…

* Kitchen Utensils: Pans, Cookers, Cups, Storage Containers…

* Bathroom Accessories: Shampoo, Body wash…

* Groceries and etc.

For future reference, here I leave a note on those items and purchase experiences (problems only!)

* IKEA online delivery takes about 2-3 weeks. To reduce the time, make a list of items to buy and call or send email to local IKEA store. (Received delivery next day!)

* When receiving delivery package, make sure all the items delivered correctly. My sofa was missing and I am still waiting for it.

* Self-installed internet service should work fine. However there are times when things don’t work as expected. There might be physical problems: check the cable line into your outlet is intact. Mine was cut off. (Had to wait 2 more days to get the technician fix the problem).

* Hand wash Top Care (For the Kitchen) doesn’t smell good. I won’t buy it again.

* Hand wash Method (Sea Minerals) smells so so. I may buy it again.

I will keep post my life in Pittsburgh once a week (hopefully)!

Let’s use Webkit Nightly

I’ve avoided using beta or nightly builds for years.

However, after using my wife’s MBP retina, I decided to become a nightly build user.

Safari input text bug drives me crazy!!

If you suffer the same pain, get one here: http://nightly.webkit.org

(Or you can enjoy the snappy Chrome, yes.)

Taking the morning off

I know all things are relative, but it feels pretty good to sleep for additional 2 hours in the morning. Since I am not a kind of morning person, this 2-hour sleep in the MORNING acts like a super charger.

As a bonus, the metro at this hour has enough personal space for everyone.

Today’s trip.

Started from Seoul National Univ. station, to Pangyo where the office is located. To Maeheon to have lunch, to office again, and now I am heading for SNU stn. About 2-3hrs later, I have to drop by Inbae’s house. Not a typical day for me.

By the way, there’s reason for my last post was written in Korean. It’s been a long time I actively did something in English. I couldn’t easily write something longer than 140 characters in English.

Bought a new bag from Lexon. I used one of their early airline models several years ago. I think it lasted about a year. Hope this one lasts longer.

Finder hangs.

I am trying to copy relatively large number of files from my USB External HDD to newly bought NAS (about 10,000 files, separated in 1800 folders, total size of 120GB.)

When I dragged the selected folders into a folder in a NAS, Finder stopped responding to my keyboard/mouse events and showing the spinning beachball of death. File operation seemed to be working, so I just fired up the Activity Monitor to check if it’s dead or not.

Even though the name of the Finder was in red with dreadful “(Not Responding)” tag, its CPU usage kept changing. Since I’m using both Disk and Network IO, by checking those values assured me that Finder will revive from it’s non-responding status when all the copying is done.

Why have Finder blocked main thread? Isn’t it what Apple strongly discourages?

New Apple Airport Express with Apple TV 2nd Gen.

A few days ago, I bought a so-called ‘white Apple TV’ Airport Express. Before buying this one, I’ve been using 2nd Gen Airport Express for my home router.

It was not that the existing one needs replacing but I wanted to improve home media sharing system.
After marriage, old MBP late 2008 took the role for awhile.

There were 2 problems:
- Cost of turning on MBP 24/7 was high
- Internal SSD used as the media storage freezes occasionally

I was able to persuade my wife that we can get benefit from a Network Attached Storage. As for the first step of getting a NAS, new router with lan port is required. That’s why I bought the white Apple TV express.

Unfortunately, I didn’t know it supports only 10/100 Mbps. Man, it’s 2012! Who would make a router without Gigabit support?!

For that reason, white apple tv express lived in our home only about 5 days. Though it was short, I liked it sitting next to my Apple TV.
